Movie: Precious

•Write a short description of the book/text. A troubled teen from Harlem becomes pregnant with her second child, is verbally abused by her mother, and is given the opportunity to attend a school that will make more of a positive impact on her life.

•What diverse group or groups is being depicted? The African American, abused children, poverty and pregnant teenagers.

•How did reading or viewing your text change your perception of students who might be in your classroom? I think the movie would be an eye opener for the class. It definitely gave me a different view on people struggling in these situations. The way it was explicitly displayed all the pain the young teen went through. As a teacher, I would be more aware of the warning signs of neglect and abuse, and understand somewhat how to handle it.

•How did reading or viewing your text enhance your cultural awareness of the students you will serve? Yes, I feel like I have been educated better on the topics addressed in the film. The students who view this will be very shocked by the things seen in the movie. It is horrible all the things that happened to such a young girl and students will be able to relate to her, since they are her age. I think viewing the video would raise awareness on the problems in the video.

•Was this text relevant to your teaching practice and/or the classroom community? I don’t know if I would be able to connect it with a specific class I would be teaching besides psychology, but I would definitely consider showing it to bring awareness to the subjects discussed about.

•Do you recommend this text to others and your students? Why or why not? Absolutely, it is a true eye opener to many teenagers’ realities. I think people try not to think about the situations like this but they need to be discussed on a more regular basis, and I think this movie gives not only good examples but realistic situations and a very explicit visual to the world of these crimes.
